HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
Most NC homeowner policies set the standard deductible at $1,000 to $2,500 and the wind/hail deductible at one or two percent of the dwelling coverage — so on a $400,000 home, a one-percent wind/hail deductible is $4,000. That number is on the declarations page. Read it before the storm, not after.
NC General Statute § 58-2-164 makes it illegal for a contractor to waive, rebate, or absorb a homeowner’s deductible. If a roofer offers to “cover your deductible” or do the job “no out-of-pocket,” that is insurance fraud, and a paper-trailed felony for both the contractor and the homeowner. Walk away. The deductible is real money you owe — the rest of the claim is supposed to make you whole on what is left.
