Home / Glossary / Percentage deductible
INSURANCE
A percentage deductible is calculated as a percent of your home's dwelling-coverage limit, not a flat dollar amount. On wind and hail claims in North Carolina, most policies now carry a separate one- or two-percent wind/hail deductible that can be several times larger than the flat deductible the homeowner expects.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
On a $350,000 dwelling, a two-percent wind/hail deductible is $7,000 — nearly triple what a homeowner assumes when they think of a standard $2,500 flat deductible. The wind/hail deductible is typically listed separately on the declarations page, sometimes in a wind/hail endorsement that follows the main dec sheet. It is the most commonly misread number we encounter when a homeowner calls after a storm and wants to know what their check is going to look like.
NC is not the most aggressive state for percentage deductibles — coastal markets in Florida and Texas run three to five percent routinely. But NC east of I-95 has seen carriers push percentage deductibles higher as storm frequency has risen. If you have not read your dec page in the last few years, pull it before the next storm season. The deductible line is the first thing we ask about on any claim intake call.
