Home / Glossary / Underlayment
MATERIALS
Underlayment is the water-resistant layer installed between the roof decking and the shingles. It is the second line of defense if water gets past the shingles. Modern NC roofs use synthetic underlayment over the field of the roof and ice-and-water shield in vulnerable areas.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
For decades the standard underlayment was asphalt-saturated felt paper — “15-pound” or “30-pound” felt. It worked, but tore in wind and degraded fast in heat. Synthetic underlayment took over the NC market over the last 15 years: lighter, stronger, UV-stable, and faster to install. Most reputable roofers in the state use it on every job.
On an insurance claim, underlayment is almost always part of the tear-off scope, not an add-on. If the carrier’s estimate omits underlayment from a full-replacement scope, that is a supplement item — you cannot put new shingles back on without removing and replacing what is under them. Synthetic underlayment is also a manufacturer warranty requirement on most premium shingle systems.
