Home / Glossary / Cool roof rating
CERTIFICATIONS
A cool roof rating measures a roofing product's ability to reflect solar energy and release absorbed heat. The two metrics are solar reflectance (SR) and thermal emittance (TE), often combined into a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI). Energy Star certifies roofing products that meet minimum SR and TE thresholds for their product type.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
NC sits in a mixed heating-and-cooling climate — IECC climate zones 3 and 4 depending on the county. Cool roofs provide the biggest benefit in hot, sunny regions where air conditioning is the dominant energy cost. In NC's piedmont and coastal areas, an Energy Star-rated white or light-colored roofing product can measurably reduce peak cooling loads in summer. In the mountains, where heating costs are higher, the benefit is less clear — a darker roof absorbs more useful heat in winter as well. The right answer depends on the building, the climate zone, and the homeowner's priorities.
For residential asphalt shingles, Energy Star-rated products are available from all three major manufacturers in lighter color ranges — beige, light gray, weathered wood tones. Most NC homeowners choose shingle color for curb appeal rather than solar reflectance, which is reasonable — the energy savings on a residential roof in NC's climate rarely justify overriding aesthetic preference. Where cool-roof ratings carry more weight is on commercial flat roofs: a large white TPO membrane on a warehouse or retail building can reduce cooling demand enough to recover the cost difference in utility savings within a few years.
