PROCESS
FORTIFIED Roof is a voluntary construction standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) that builds a roof to resist hurricanes, hail, and high winds. A FORTIFIED roof can earn an NC homeowner an insurance premium discount and is a real durability upgrade.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
FORTIFIED comes in three tiers — Roof, Silver, and Gold. The base “Roof” tier is what most NC homeowners care about: a sealed roof deck (taped seams), enhanced nailing pattern, drip edge, and starter shingles per spec. Some NC carriers offer a 10–35 percent windstorm-premium reduction on properties with current FORTIFIED designation. Discounts vary by carrier and by county — ask yours.
FORTIFIED is documented by an IBHS-accredited evaluator (a third party, not the roofer) who inspects during install and signs the certificate. We coordinate the evaluator visits and provide the deck-tape photos, nailing photos, and material certifications IBHS requires. Most coastal-NC and storm-prone counties are seeing rising FORTIFIED uptake; in inland counties the case still depends on what the homeowner’s carrier offers.
