A manufacturer warranty is the shingle maker’s promise that the materials will not fail prematurely. Manufacturer warranties cover the shingle product itself — not the labor to install or remove. Premium warranties from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed can extend to 50 years or lifetime.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
Manufacturer warranties come in tiers. The base warranty on a stock architectural shingle is typically a prorated 30 years — meaning year 25 covers far less than year 5. Premium warranties (GAF Golden Pledge, Owens Corning Platinum Protection, CertainTeed SureStart Plus) require certified-contractor installation of the full system — not just the shingle, but the underlayment, starter, ridge cap, and ventilation all matched to the manufacturer.
The system requirement is what the certifications buy you. A GAF Master Elite contractor can offer the Golden Pledge warranty, which is non-prorated for 50 years and includes labor for the same period. That is a real consumer benefit, not marketing copy. Read any warranty’s exclusions — storm damage is normally not a warranty event, it is an insurance event.
