Home / Glossary / Architectural shingle
MATERIALS
An architectural shingle (also called dimensional or laminated) is a heavier asphalt shingle made of two layered tabs bonded together, giving it a thicker shadow line that mimics wood shake. Architectural shingles are the residential standard in NC today — rated 25–30 years.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
Most new construction in NC since the mid-2000s uses architectural shingles. The two-layer construction makes them more wind-resistant than three-tab — manufacturer wind ratings of 110 to 130 mph are typical, and Class 4 impact-resistant versions exist for hail-prone areas. Brand names like GAF Timberline HDZ, Owens Corning Duration, and CertainTeed Landmark cover most of the market we see.
On insurance claims, like-kind matching for architectural shingles is a recurring issue. Manufacturers discontinue color lines every few years, and NC Department of Insurance “matching” guidance generally requires the carrier to pay for full-slope replacement when the original shingle is no longer available. Make sure the supplement cites the matching argument explicitly when the shingle on file has been discontinued.
