MATERIALS
Drip edge is a metal flashing installed at the edges of the roof — the eaves and rakes — to direct water away from the fascia and into the gutters. NC code has required drip edge on virtually all new and replacement asphalt-shingle roofs since the 2018 code cycle.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
Drip edge is one of the most-missed line items on storm-claim Xactimate estimates in NC. The carrier’s software sometimes leaves it off the auto-populated scope, and a homeowner without a roofer documenting the inspection ends up paying out of pocket for code-required work. Always check that drip edge is on every linear foot of the roof edge in the scope.
Drip edge also matters for warranty. Manufacturer warranties on shingles often require drip edge as part of the installation system. Skipping it (which still happens on cheaper jobs) voids both the manufacturer and most workmanship warranties — and creates a leak path right at the fascia that destroys the rake board within a few years.
