The fascia is the vertical board that runs along the edge of the roof, behind the gutter. It is the visible trim band you see when you look up at a house from the curb. Fascia takes water from any failed drip edge or backed-up gutter and is often the first board to rot.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
On older NC homes the fascia is wood — often pine — and once water gets behind a failed drip edge, the rot moves fast. Soft fascia is one of the things we tap with a screwdriver on every inspection. On newer homes the fascia is wrapped in aluminum or fiber-cement, which holds up better but still takes a hit on wind events when the wrap pulls loose.
On a storm claim, fascia damage is often missed by the carrier because the gutter has to come down to expose it. We pull a section of gutter on the inspection if we suspect rot or wrap damage and document what is behind it. That photo goes in the supplement — fascia replacement is a clean line item once the damage is on the record.
