CERTIFICATIONS
The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) is a nonprofit research and standards organization funded by the property-insurance industry. IBHS develops the FORTIFIED construction standards and certifies the third-party evaluators who inspect FORTIFIED roofs.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
IBHS is the source of authority on storm-resilience construction standards in the US. Their full-scale wind and hail testing facility (in Richburg, SC) is where the FORTIFIED specs come from — actual destructive testing on full-scale roof systems, not theoretical math. NC homeowners benefit from IBHS standards mostly through the FORTIFIED program.
A roofer cannot certify a FORTIFIED roof themselves — that is the third-party evaluator’s job. We coordinate IBHS-accredited evaluator visits, provide the documentation IBHS requires, and submit the install photos and material certifications. The paperwork is real but the resulting designation can mean a lower windstorm premium for the life of the roof, which usually pays back the premium on the upgrade in a few years.
