An overlay is a roof installation method where new shingles are installed directly on top of an existing layer of old shingles, instead of tearing the old roof off first. Overlays are cheaper up front, legal in most NC jurisdictions for a single layer, and almost always the wrong answer on a storm claim.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
NC code allows up to two layers of asphalt shingle on most residential roofs. Some homeowners and budget-roofers use that to justify an overlay — install the second layer instead of tearing off the first. On the surface it saves a few thousand dollars. In practice you cannot inspect the decking, you cannot replace failed underlayment, and you trap heat against the new shingle that shortens its life.
On an insurance claim, overlays are almost never the right call. The carrier is paying for a roof; do not give up the chance to replace what is under it. Overlays also void manufacturer warranties on most premium shingle systems and disqualify the roof from FORTIFIED designation. We will quote an overlay if a homeowner insists, but we explain what they are giving up first.
