INSURANCE
A public adjuster is a state-licensed professional who works for the homeowner — not the insurance company — to negotiate a claim settlement. Public adjusters charge a percentage of the recovery (typically 10–20 percent in NC) and are licensed by the NC Department of Insurance.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
Public adjusters can be the right call on large, contested commercial claims and on residential claims where the homeowner has already been through a denial and a failed appeal. The PA reads the policy, scopes the loss, and negotiates with the carrier on the homeowner’s behalf. Their fee comes out of the settlement, not out of pocket up front.
On a typical NC residential storm claim, a roofer who handles documentation and supplements does most of what a public adjuster would do — without taking 10–20 percent of the check. Where a PA earns their keep is on full-replacement disputes, multi-line damage that crosses roof + interior + structural, and policy-interpretation arguments. We tell homeowners honestly when their situation is in PA territory and when it is not.
