MATERIALS
The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang — the horizontal panel between the outside wall of the house and the edge of the roof. Soffit panels usually have vents in them that bring outside air into the attic, which is part of how the roof system is supposed to breathe.
HOW IT SHOWS UP IN NC ROOFING
In NC the soffit is mostly aluminum or vinyl panel on modern homes, painted plywood or fiber-cement on older ones. Damage shows up after wind events — panels pop loose at the corners, vent inserts blow out, and birds and squirrels move in within a week. We see this most often on the windward elevation after tropical systems pass through eastern NC.
On a storm claim the soffit is often part of the bigger “elevation” scope along with fascia, drip edge, and gutters — they all get hit together and they all have to match when reassembled. Color-matching aluminum soffit and fascia can be a like-kind dispute on older homes where the original color is no longer made; we cite the matching argument on the supplement when it applies.
